Above and Beyond: A Father’s Motto

Fathers are a crucial part of the nuclear family dynamic, serving an integral role in providing stability and safety to any familial structure. Yet a father need not be biological as well, many of us have been endlessly inspired, motivated, and supported by the father figures that we have in our lives.

Many of us at Effect Audio have memorable moments with our fathers. Moments that carry us through our darkest times. Moments that we are reminded of with certain songs or through the use of certain cables. Further, as avid audiophiles ourselves, we cannot help but have these memories be incited by various musicalities! This Father’s Day, we’ve selected the theme, “Above and Beyond: A Father’s Motto” and generated a couple of our team's favorite moments with their fathers, the sacrifices of their fathers, and their favorite songs and cables that remind them of their fathers.

Interview 1 with Avin, Innovation Process Analyst:

Q: What is your favorite memory of your father?

A: When I was a kid, my father owned a Sony PlayStation 2. I remember spending endless hours with him on that console. Every day after school, we would play together. Despite his busy schedule as a general manager, the moment he got home, he would set aside his work to spend time with me. We sank countless hours into games like Dynasty Warriors 5 and WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007, having a lot of fun joshing around.

While my hands gripped that Sony controller, he often imparted invaluable life lessons. He would talk about the importance of family, diligence, and staying focused on what truly matters.

Looking back, I realize he often stayed up very late to complete his work. Despite the demands of his job, nothing was more important to him than family. He deliberately put aside his work until after I was asleep so he could spend time with me as I was growing up. These are the moments I truly appreciate, and reminiscing about them always makes me feel warm inside.

Q: Are there any songs that remind you of your father?

A: He used to sing "Cat’s in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin all the time. When I asked him about it, he said it was a reminder of what not to do as a father. Over time, I’ve come to associate the song with an important life lesson he imparted to me about the significance of family. It has become one of my fondest memories of my dad.

Q: Are there any Effect Audio products that would make a great father’s day present?

A: I think he would really enjoy listening to that song with our PILGRIM: NOIR! Its robust and warm sound reminds me of my dad. In fact, my dad loves listening to music, and with the NOIR’s sophisticated, smooth tone, I bet his blues would sound even more enjoyable.

Interview 2 with Hong Zhang, Product and Production Manager:

Q: What is your favorite memory with your father?

A: I was always a top scorer in my class, and my father, an academic at a local university, had always been proud of me. However, when I didn't fare well in my national examinations, I took it really hard. After arriving home from school, I holed myself up in my room and cried my eyes out. My perfect record seemed forever tainted by this one grade.

I believe my dad had just arrived home and heard me bawling. He gently knocked on the door and asked if everything was okay. "No," I replied in a nasally tone, making it obvious that I had been crying. He opened the door and asked me what was wrong. I spilled the beans, telling him I felt like a failure and that this was why my eyes were so puffy.

He looked at me and told me that it was a silly notion to think I was a failure because of one grade. "You are only a failure if you stop trying," he said. He then stood up and left the room, returning five minutes later with a dusty old box he had dug out of the family attic. It contained his old report cards.

To my surprise, my father had not always done very well in school. In fact, he had spent a large part of his youth attaining mediocre grades. He opened up about his struggles with attention as a youth and how he had overcome them. Then, he gave me the best hug I have ever received.

Q: Are there any songs that remind you of your father?

A: I don’t think there’s any particular song that reminds me of my dad. He loves music but listens to such a wide array of tunes, from opera to show tunes to lofi.

Q: Are there any Effect Audio products that would make a great father’s day present?

A: There definitely is a cable I would love to get him – the CODE 24C. Oftentimes, I listen to K-pop or classical music with the CODE 24C, and it feels like my dad’s warm hug all over again. The deep and powerful sub-bass, sentimental tone, and warm aural inputs it conveys remind me of the comfort my dad gave me that day. My dad’s favorite color is purple too, so it perfectly matches this whimsical purple onesie that he owns.!

Interview 3 with Lim Rui, Marketing Executive:

Q: What is your favorite memory with your father?

A: My favorite memory of my dad is from when we were touring in Europe around the age of five. Back then, I was a scrawny kid who thought I could do anything. As my family and I were cruising the countryside of Ireland, we suddenly heard a BANG! The car slowly came to a halt. My dad told us to stay in the car while he went out to check what was wrong.

As an impulsive child, my curiosity got the better of me. I opened the door and asked my dad what was wrong. He looked at me and laughed, pointing at the gash in our tire. Having watched a lot of Bob the Builder as a kid, I knew we needed the spare tire. I asked my dad to help me put it down because I wanted to be the one to save our family from this ordeal by changing the tire.

Yet, try as I might, I could not lift the tire. Then, my dad’s big, gruff hands gripped the tire. I remember seeing this tire, which seemed unliftable, being lifted by my dad with just one hand. At that moment, I thought my dad was so strong he was a superhero or something, and I wanted to grow up to be just like him.

Q: Are there any songs that remind you of your father?

A: Yeah, my father really loves Tom Jones and his strong, booming voice. He always says that he marvels at Jones’ breadth and complexity of his soothing tone and its ability to convey so much emotion!

Q: Are there any Effect Audio products that would make a great father’s day present?

A: Recently, my father tried on a pair of my IEMs and he loves them. Every time I’m over at his flat, he has them on. He loves warmer and bassier sounds, so he pairs them with the Ares S 8W. He thinks the IEMs are improved with the powerful and dynamic sounds that the Ares S 8W produces. The warm and full sound of the Ares S 8W also reminds me of my dad’s contributions to my life and the times he was there for me.

A common thread that links these stories is the stability and comfort that a father’s presence brings. Much like your favorite piece of music or TV show, something that is always there to support and offer you comfort, a father’s warmth always lifts you up in the darkest of times. Celebrate this Father’s Day with a gift that keeps on giving. Plug in and reminisce about your best days with your dad.
